Benefits of a Mini-Split System
Following our goal to provide the most energy-efficient air conditioning systems to local families and businesses, Gator Air and Energy installs and services mini-split air conditioning systems to the Gainesville area. Commonly called “mini-splits,” these ductless heating and cooling options can be a very energy efficient way to distribute air in all types of settings. Mini-splits supply air conditioning to individual rooms in a building through a setup that does not require ducts. Mini-splits feature both an indoor and an outdoor unit that are connected by small cables and a line of refrigerant running through a small hole in the wall. The outdoor unit is typically placed at ground level, while the indoor unit can be mounted high on the wall of a room and be controlled by a remote or preset to work automatically.
Mini-splits dodge the need for concealing any bulky ductwork within the home through their use of thin copper tubing that sends refrigerant directly to the wall mounted blower inside. This function eliminates the need for an evaporator unit in the basement or attic, and of the two necessary units, the noisier one that serves as the compressor and condenser is placed outside. In the summer, the outdoor unit supplies the refrigerant that cools the air coming through the indoor unit, and in the winter, the outdoor unit absorbs heat from the outdoor air and sends that to the indoor unit to warm the space.
Utilization of Mini-Splits
These compact, convenient systems perfectly adapt to a variety of situations to offer efficient heating and cooling all year round. Mini-splits serve multifamily households well as they provide air conditioning to separate spaces where the temperature can be adjusted as needed. They can also fill in as retrofit add-ons to houses and buildings with non-ducted heating systems such as radiant panels, hot water heat, and space heaters. Installing a mini-split is a great choice if a home or office has recently been expanded with an additional room or living area and putting in distribution ductwork is impossible or inconvenient. Similarly, in places such as small apartments where extra ductwork is not an option, mini-splits are the answer.
In all of these various situations and in still others as well, ductless mini-splits would prove to be much simpler to insert than other types of air conditioning systems. The unsightly nature of an outdoor unit in a conspicuous space can be avoided with the range of lengths in which the connecting conduits come. The outdoor unit can be located as much as fifty feet away from the indoor evaporator, so rooms in the front of the house can be cooled when the compressor is on a different side of the building.
Furthermore, connecting the two units through the wall usually only requires a three-inch hole in the wall. This fact makes mini-splits less invasive into the structure of the home and actually keeps the home safer than through-the-wall and window-mounted room air conditioners that allow easy entrance for intruders. The indoor unit can be placed in the room in the way that is most conducive to the interior design and decor of the space. Suspending it from a ceiling, mounting it flush into a drop ceiling, hanging it on the wall, or setting up a floor-standing model are all options for the indoor unit. Mini-split systems are capable of coming duct-free, but implanting a small stream of ducts into the ceiling is an option for individuals who would prefer grilles in the ceiling to the larger indoor unit on the wall.
One of the main reasons that Gator Air and Energy supplies mini-splits to the Gainesville area is because their ductless nature can save families and businesses a significant amount of money and energy. Ducts can be responsible for the loss of 25%-40% of conditioned air, so bypassing the need for ducts altogether generates instant savings. The small size and flexibility for zoning of mini-split systems are energy efficient advantages of mini-splits because as many as four indoor units can handle air from one outdoor unit, and as each indoor unit comes equipped with its own thermostat, people only need to pay for and consume heating and cooling for a space when they occupy it.
As mini-splits use less energy overall to operate, the savings earned from the use of mini-splits can occasionally be as much as 50%. Gator Air and Energy works with all the major mini-split system brands such as Daikin, Mitsubishi, Gree, and Sanyo.
